Getting here
If you search for «Terrazza Campailla», your satnav sends you up a narrow lane with steps: awkward on foot with luggage, impossible by car. The right way is another one, and it’s very easy.
1
Set the Museum of Medicine
In your satnav use this pin, not «Terrazza Campailla».
2
Arrive in Piazza Matteotti
It is the most convenient square in the centre: flat, with no steps.
3
Sixty metres on foot
From the square to the little square of the Campailla Museum: the green door with the majolica sign is at number 6.
The old town is best explored on foot; the sea is about twenty kilometres away. Sonia is happy to suggest where to go.
✦
Baroque
Modica is one of the late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, its best-known churches are the Duomo di San Giorgio, at the top of its grand staircase, and San Pietro, 420 metres from here.
✦
Chocolate
Modica Chocolate PGI is worked cold, so the sugar never melts: that is why it is grainy, with an intense cocoa flavour. You will find it in the shops of the old town, along with 'mpanatigghi, small pastries filled with chocolate and meat.
✦
The sea
Marina di Modica, about twenty kilometres away, has a long sandy beach, and there are many more along the coast. Ask Sonia which one suits you best.
